Using the maps becomes very straightforward once you know what you are doing.

 

You will find a selection of buttons in the corner of each map, the key symbols, and each one is self explanatory:

 

Pressing + will zoom in on the map

Pressing - will zoom back out again

 

You can move the map around either by  left click & holding, then move your mouse to move the map

or by using the the arrow keys in the key symbols < ^ > in the corner of the map.
